Handwriting Font AI: How AI Can Help You Make Your Own Font

What a handwriting font AI can and can’t do, where AI genuinely helps when you turn handwriting into a font, and what HandFonty is building.

Handwriting Font AI: How AI Can Help You Make Your Own Font

"Handwriting font AI" can mean two quite different things. Some tools generate a font that looks like handwriting, so the result is a stranger's style or an average of many. Others use AI to help you turn your own handwriting into a font faster. HandFonty only does the second.

This post covers where AI helps, where it doesn't, and what we're building.

What a handwriting font AI is good at

AI is useful for the repetitive, technical steps between "I wrote some letters" and "I have a working font":

  • Recognising letters in a photo. Working out which mark is an l, which is an I and which is a 1, so you don't have to label every character by hand. This powers image to font.
  • Cleaning strokes. Removing paper texture, ink bleed and small specks without rounding off the shape of your letters.
  • Suggesting spacing. Proposing first values for letter widths and pairs like To or AV, which you can then adjust.
  • Filling gaps, if you ask. Drafting a missing character in the style of the letters you've already written, clearly marked as a suggestion for you to accept, redraw or delete.

What AI shouldn't decide for you

A handwriting font is personal, so some choices should stay with you:

  • Your letterforms. If a tool quietly "improves" your g, the font stops being your handwriting.
  • Hidden substitutions. A missing character should never be silently filled with a system font or with someone else's letter. HandFonty shows unwritten characters as placeholders and marks incomplete fonts as drafts.
  • Ownership. A font made from your strokes belongs to you. Gray reference letters are only guides and are never put into the file.

How HandFonty uses AI

Our goal is a handwriting font generator where AI saves you time without taking over:

StepTodayWith AI assist
Getting letters inDraw each letter with a mouse, finger or stylusAlso upload a photo or scan and have letters detected
Cleaning strokesAdjustable smoothing while drawingAutomatic clean-up of traced letters
SpacingManual per-letter and global spacingSuggested starting values you can tune
Missing lettersShown as placeholdersOptional style-matched drafts you approve

These features are planned to launch within the next few weeks, together with image upload.

Make your own font today

You can already make a complete handwriting font without any AI: open the free online font maker, draw your letters, refine the spacing and download OTF or TTF. Everything you draw now will work with the AI tools when they launch.
